Dreaming of transforming your backyard, courtyard, or patio with a timeless, natural look? Then travertine pavers may be the natural stone you are looking for!
For centuries, travertine was the go-to building material in Ancient Europe and Italy, and it’s making a come-back and with good reason too! Travertine natural stone pavers have a unique look featuring beautiful naturally occurring veining, profound strength and durability, and ability to withstand extreme weather. They are as functional as they are beautiful, both factors contributing to their return in popularity with outdoor and exterior home projects.
Travertine is a light-coloured, calcite-based stone formed from mineral springs. It is typically found in limestone caves or at the mouth of hot springs.
Known for its strong and durable nature, travertine stone pavers are excellent for indoor and outdoor areas such as driveways and commercial spaces where long-lasting materials that can withstand weight and high-level traffic, are essential.
Our collection of Travertine tiles is available in the Leggero Cream, a light-coloured stone. It’s caramel colouring is surprisingly easy on the eyes – even during Sydney’s brightest summer days! Whether you’re paving a grand driveway or adding charm to a quaint garden path or creating a warm and sophisticated patio, our Leggero Travertine Pavers will deliver the unique touch required. On the other hand, if you’re looking for something even more majestic, check out our Silver Travertine pavers. They boast a striking and electrifying design which looks like the ocean during a storm, in beautiful creams, silver and copper hues. The contrasting light and dark swirls and veining will add that special touch wherever installed.
Travertine pavers are strong, durable, and beautiful natural stone pavers, available in two grades. We recommend investing in an A-Grade, high-density travertine for high foot-traffic areas to reduce the chance of cracking with general wear and tear.
As with all natural stone pavers, it’s best to hire a professional stonemason who is experienced with natural stone pavers to install your travertine pavers. If you are installing them yourself, we have some pointers. While high-density, first grade travertine stone pavers can be laid on a sand base, we recommend installing them on a sand-cement base instead of a river-sand bed. This will help keep the travertine in place and help you grout the joints better.
Given its desert climate, temperatures in Australia can reach highs of 40 degrees Celsius, or more, in summer. So when choosing a natural stone paver for your outdoor areas, it’s imperative to choose a paver that stays cool underfoot, even in direct sunlight. This ensures that your feet don’t burn as you walk (often barefoot) on them, and also keeps the general temperature of the outdoor area cooler.
Travertine pavers definitely excel in this regard and maintain a cool temperature even under direct sunlight. As such, they’re an excellent choice for your home’s exterior areas like walkways and patios.
Along with staying cool underfoot, travertine pavers can also withstand cold temperatures and do not crack under the pressure of extreme changing climates.
As with all natural stones, we strongly recommend regularly sealing your travertine pavers to protect them, maintain their longevity and prevent any staining. Travertine’s hair fractures, though beautiful, also capture stains, dirt and other environmental debris. Sealing prevents this debris from staining the stone over time, but also helps with keeping them clean.
While some people prefer the natural look for their travertine pavers and avoid grouting them, this can become problematic as the spaces between the stones can collect dirt. As it’s a natural stone, this can be tough to clean and can attract mould and mildew. In order to maintain your travertine paver’s cleanliness and aesthetic, we recommend grouting the entire paver and its joints.
While travertine pavers are great for installation for patios and terraces, we do caution you with choosing travertine for poolside areas. This is because tumbled travertine is slippery when wet and the beautiful occurring veining can trap debris and be difficult to clean. When installed as pool coping, these hair fractures in the stone can also cut skin when pulling yourself out of the pool. Tumbled Travertine has a P3 rating on the “Wet Pendulum Test” which means it’s very slippery. We recommend choosing pavers with a P4 or P5 slip rating for pool surrounds. Read more about this here. If you still want install travertine as your pool paver, we recommend installing a “B” grade travertine as it’s less slippery, or a travertine-look porcelain paver which is easier to maintain, safer and non-slip.

Travertine pavers are made from blocks of travertine, a calcite-based, sedimentary stone typically found in earth deposits near mineral springs. Minerals and other substances seep into the deposit, giving each stone a unique appearance with an array of colours and patterns. Travertine pavers are available in various sizes and colours for outdoor uses.
Travertine pavers add a timeless and natural look to any area in your home. They’re also a strong and durable natural stone paver, providing longevity to all your exterior surfaces. They stay exceptionally cool underfoot even when exposed to extreme heat, making them an ideal paver for Sydney’s intense summers.
As they have a pitted surface with naturally occurring hair fractures, travertine tiles easily collect dirt. This is why regular sweeping and mopping the pavers using warm water mixed with a mild, non-abrasive detergent, is recommended to keep them clean. In the case of removing tough stains, use a non-acidic poultice powder. Like all natural pavers, we recommend sealing your travertine stones to prevent surface staining and damage. If you use a good quality sealant, travertine pavers require resealing every 6 years. Armstone offers a wide selection of sealers, cleaners and stain removers for travertine pavers.
