Frequently Asked Questions

Crazy stone paving is the name given to a form of paving where different-sized pieces of flat stones are laid in an almost mosaic-like structure. Although the style originated in ancient Rome, the irregular patterns and shapes of stones inspired its irregular naming. This method is used for hard landscaping of pathways, patios, gardens, driveways, pool sides, and many other surfaces.

Due to the nature of crazy paving, there isn’t a single conventional way of laying the stones. As such, installing crazy paving really depends on whether you want to lay it on a soft surface (such as gravel), a hard surface (such as a compacted road base), or even concrete.

Usually, the way most folks lay crazy paving is by first laying down a layer of road base or hardcore stones about 40 to 80mm thick. Next, they put in a strip drain and then set the pavers in place using a mortar mix that’s three parts sand to one part cement.

Crazy paving costs between $60 and $100 per square metre, depending on the type of stone and the complexity of prep work. If you would like a more accurate quote for your project, please contact us for a free site visit and an obligation-free quote.

Once you’ve installed and laid down the crazy pavers, allow 24 hours for them to settle. Fill the gaps with polymer-enhanced sanded grout then add a grout booster to the sanded grout to prevent shrinkage and ensure flexibility.

Its irregular and abstract patterns lend a timeless, retro charm to modern spaces, making it versatile for paths, driveways, decks, poolsides, and more.
