Rectangular Stepping Stones add a clean, sleek and modern touch as steppers around your outdoor areas. Their consistent rectangular shape of 800x400x30mm or 1200x400x30mm is ideal for steps leading to and from your home’s entrance or backyard, in and around the pool, or as stairs connecting different parts of the garden together.
Armstone’s natural rectangular stepping stones are available in limestone, granite, marble and bluestone. So whether your home and outdoors have warmer or cooler tones, traditional or modern design, these steppers will match (or contrast) your home’s aesthetic.
Most of our collection of rectangular steppers can be laid directly on sand, grass or even soil. So, if you’re looking for a quick DIY project at home, this is something you can easily accomplish yourself. Of course there are basic guidelines we recommend, however the project is straight-forward enough without the need of professional natural stone installers.
Rectangular Stepping Stones are dense and durable, which means that they are extremely suitable for high-foot traffic areas, and most of our collection have a high slip-rating surface. This means you can install the stepping stones around swimming pools and paths that are exposed to the elements, and rest assured no one will slip when the stone is wet. Along with their practical and functional purpose, rectangular stepping stones are an excellent choice for dividing sections of your backyard, connecting areas like slopes and flat surfaces and even using them as a focal point/feature.
Unlike our organic and circular stepping stones, many of our rectangular stepping stones are available with matching pavers, tiles and even pool coping. So if you love to create a unified look between your patio, steps, and pool surrounds, then check out our DuToit and Melba Limestone, Mistral and Gris Granite, Siri and Frostine Marble, and Nulla Bluestone Stepping Stones.
Rectangular stepping stones add a sense of style to your outdoor areas. Though they have extremely clean cut lines and are uniform all around, you can add extra volume and texture by adding garden pebbles around the crevices of the steps. Armstone supplies both natural and polished garden pebbles and they are an excellent addition to rectangular stepping stones. As well as filling the gaps between the steps, they allow for adequate drainage for the soil or grass underneath, while also keeping the soil and grass in place.
In terms of the colour options of our natural rectangular stepping stones, we have three different categories: light, dark and warm coloured. Our light coloured collection includes the DuToit Limestone, Siri Marble and Frostine Marble Stepping Stones. These feature a light-grey colouring with natural white specks and veining throughout. The Frostine Marble Stepping Stones are probably the more majestic of the three, and add a winter wonderland appeal wherever they are installed.
Armstone’s Grampian Limestone and Melba Limestone Stepping Stones feature a warm yellow-copper colouring with naturally occurring fossil patterns throughout, very typical of limestone pavers. The Melba is best suited for outdoor installations with warmer and traditionally designed homes and gardens. These limestone stepping stones also pair beautifully with our natural limestone pavers and cobblestones.
Finally, our dark coloured rectangular steppers include all the granite steps: Graphene, Gabbo, Gris and Mistral, and the Nulla Bluestone Stepping Stones. Being dark stepping stones, they absorb a lot more heat than the lighter coloured ones, and as a result can get hotter under-foot during Sydney’s extreme summers. On the other hand, they mask stains a lot better. They’re also sleek and stylish, a perfect choice for more modern outdoor designs.

Yes, installing gravel under rectangular stepping steps has a deeper function than just making them look good. It increases drainage and keeps them sturdy and level, saving you from wobbly walks after it rains.
The biggest difference between natural stone pavers and rectangular stepping stones is in their functionality and size. Natural stone pavers are available in a variety of sizes and shapes, ideal for installation in patios, driveways, and pool surrounds. On the other hand, rectangular stepping stones are set in a specific rectangular shape, to be used for paths and pavements.
While you don’t always need to cement the rectangular stepping stones in place, we recommend you do so in high foot-traffic areas as this will keep sturdy and avoid movement over time. But for casual paths through the garden, laying the stepping stones on a solid sand or gravel base will suffice.
Buying rectangular stepping stones is much more cost and time-effective than making them yourself. Especially if you are looking for quality stone steppers that will stand the test of time.
The short answer is yes, you can lay rectangular stepping stones straight onto soil. The long answer is, if you want your path to stand the test of time, we recommend preparing the base area with a layer of sand or gravel before laying the stepping stones. This helps stop them from shifting and sinking over time.
It’s best to install rectangular stepping stones on a bed of sand, concrete, mortar or gravel. A base like this creates an even foundation and allows for drainage, which keeps your stepping stones stable over time.
When installing rectangular stepping stones, it’s best to dig a little deeper than the thickness of the stones themselves. Aim for about 2-3 inches. This allows you to fit a solid base layer before securely fitting your steppers.
Yes, you can install rectangular stepping stones without a mortar bed, however we don’t recommend this. A mortar bed provides stability for the stepping stones and prevents the stones from shifting over time, especially when installed on softer soil.
We strongly recommend installing your rectangular stepping stones flush to the ground. Not only does this make them look sleek and stylish, it also ensures safety by preventing any trips while walking and makes mowing the lawn easier.
While you could install rectangular stepping stones straight onto the grass, this may cause the stones to shift or sink over time and damage the steppers and your garden. This is why we recommend a reliable setup for your foundation, where you strip back the grass and install a proper base first.
Installing a solid base and foundation is the key to preventing your rectangular stepping stones from sinking over time. First, lay down a good layer of compacted gravel topped with sand. Then add your concrete, mortar or gravel. This setup supports the stones evenly, stopping any shifting and sinking that is prone to happen with regular wear and tear of foot-traffic and general ground movement.
Installing rectangular stepping stones on uneven ground is much the same as installing them on an even surface: start with the base and foundation first. To do this, create an even working area, digging the ground so that it becomes level. Then fill this with compacted gravel and sand and add concrete, mortar or gravel.
A gap of about 200mm works well between stepping stones. It’s enough room to walk comfortably but close enough to keep your garden looking tidy and intentional.
