What are the Pros and Cons of Porcelain Tiles?

Before committing to installing your new porcelain tile floor, there are a few things we here at Armstone think you might want to consider. Below we’ve highlighted our top 3 pros and top 3 cons for porcelain as a tile flooring option!

Pro #1 – Durability and Strength: Without a doubt, one of the biggest pros when considering porcelain tiles over anything else is the durability and firmness of the tile. Porcelain doesn’t scratch or wither under the continued use of any cleaning products and it’s incredibly tough, so it won’t break or crack if there’s a lot of weight on the tile.

Pro #2 – Cleanliness: If you’ve got kids or you like throwing red wine around the place, this one’s probably your favourite! Porcelain, due to it’s incredibly low absorption rate,  doesn’t stain and is far easier to clean. You’ll never have to worry about big spills or dropped liquids again! Because of the composition of porcelain, the liquid will sit on top of the tile, rather than seeping in, which means that even if you don’t catch the spill when it happens, you can always clean it up later for the same result.

Pro #3 – Maintenance: one of the big struggles with stone and other tiling options alike is the continued stress of sealing, waxing and polishing. Again, because of the way porcelain tiles are made, they will not even need to be sealed, waxed or polished. A bit of a clean every now and then is still recommended of course, but you will be able to sleep easy knowing your porcelain tiles are looking after themselves!

Pro #4 – Style: The cherry on top when it comes to choosing porcelain is the brilliant and almost limitless variations of style and colour. Available in all kinds of colours palettes, textures and sizes, porcelain is likely going to be able to provide you with what you’re looking for! Ivory Travertine Porcelain Tiles

Now it’s time for the other side of the coin! If you were sold on porcelain, you may want to read on… Just in case.

Con #1 – Cost: The cost of tiles is all quite relative to the acquisition of that tile. Unfortunately, while it is good as a tile, porcelain is incredibly dense, which makes it harder to drill, cut and shape. All of that comes with a cost and that cost is to you. Porcelain is going to be more expensive than some of your other tiling options, but it is important to weigh up the cost of the tiles relevant to the benefit.

Con #2 – Weight & Installation: Porcelain is heavy! Which is ok once the tile is laying down next to your pool, but the time in-between and the installation of these tiles is difficult as a result. For you, what this means is you may require a professional to instal these tiles (rather than doing it yourself) and if you do go down that route, it may be more expensive than getting a professional to instal a lighter tile.

At Armstone, we offer a wide variety of porcelain tiles and have a team dedicated to help you find the perfect tile for your home. For more information or to speak to an expert, get in touch today!
